A4F offers testing and training capabilities, in a unique Experimental Unit (uel), with state-of-the-art and diversified types of systems for the growth and processing of microalgae biomass. This gmo compliant Experimental Unit has currently 10 m3; of capacity, and will be scaled-up to 20 m3. In uel we test and optimize biological and engineering solutions for the production of new strains and products, like high value product enriched biomass. In uel is also where we train Customer’s personnel, with the best practices in industrial microalgae production. This facility is located in Lisbon, in a Science and Technology Campus, which is very convenient for Clients and for collaboration with most Universities and Partners around the World. A4F combines these capabilities with relevant international market knowledge and experience on microalgae marketing and sales, as well as product development.

A4f is able to bring together:

  • A Multidisciplinary team of over 35 employees (3 PhD, 25 Msc, 5 Bachelors, 2 others) covering Biologists, Engineers, Managers and Marketing & Sales experts.
  • Through research and development projects across Europe we interact with more than 100 experts in microalgae biotechnologies;
    Offices in Lisbon, Porto, and representatives in Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Morocco, in a growing network;
  • Lisbon Innovation Laboratory (lil), microalgae research and development (gmo compliant) laboratory, with analytical and quality control, having also a molecular biology suite, microscopy and fermentation dedicated areas. It has the capacity for scale-up to 20+ liters of microalgae culture including inoculum for pilot testing;
  • Lisbon Experimental Unit (uel) for pilot scale production and processing of microalgae. It has the capability to carry out microalgae production trials (including gmos) in a variety of production systems and designs (flat-panel, tubular photobioreactors, raceways and cascade raceways);
  • Private culture collection of over 1.400 strains (1.200 of which are microalgae) including the most industrially relevant strains. This is one of the largest private freshwater microalgae collections in the world.
  • Our collection also includes bacteria and isolated contaminants.
