CoLAB BIOREF intends to be one of the driving forces to change the national paradigm of economic development based on fossils, to the use of biomass as an endogenous renewable resource.
In 2019, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) awarded the title of Collaborative Laboratory to CoLAB BIOREF – a private non-profit association that brings together nine entities from the Portuguese National Scientific and Technological System and eleven companies keen to look for new biomass-based advanced processes and technologies for investing into marketable products. CoLAB BIOREF aims to contribute to a low carbon and/or zero carbon economy for Portugal (Horizon 2030), generating new value chains, creating skilled employment and boosting the national bio-economy.
In addition to A4F – Algae for Future, CoLAB BIOREF has several members from Universities, Polytechnic Institutes and corporate institutions, namely IST/UL, University of Minho, University Nova de Lisboa, University of Porto, University of Aveiro, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portalegre Polytechnic Institute, University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Galp Energia, Tratolixo, Sysadvance, Biotrend, BioDouroGas, Solvay, TAP Air Portugal, Sysadvance, SilicoLife, RAIZ, BLC3, and coordinated by LNEG – National Laboratory for Energy and Geology.
As an expert on microalgae production, A4F will contribute with all the algae biomass activities, from culturing to harvesting and valorization by subsequent downstream processing and biorefining.
Through CoLAB BIOREF, the various partners involved will be able to work in a strategic and integrated way for the development of new technologies that allow to change the economic paradigm of fossil-fuel, and to design and implement biorefineries oriented towards the sustainable use of biomass.
