Demonstrating energy intensive industry-integrated solutions to produce liquid renewable energy carriers from CAPTUred carbon emissionS

GHG emission reduction policies in energy-intensive industries can lead to job losses and decreased competitiveness. Additionally, excess renewable energy generation risks being wasted if not utilized. Carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies, which use industrial emissions and surplus renewable energy, are crucial for a clean industrial energy transition. However, many are currently expensive and inefficient. CAPTUS aims to showcase sustainable and scalable methods to transform industrial carbon emissions and surplus renewable electricity into valuable energy products. To this end, 3 complete value chains will be demonstrated at 3 different demo-sites: (i) Bioprocess based on a two-stage fermentation to produce triglycerides in a steel plant, (ii) Lipids-rich microalgae cultivation followed by hydrothermal liquefaction to produce bio-oils in a chemical plant, and (iii) Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to produce formic acid in a cement plant. These technologies will be trialed at TRL7, with the produced energy carriers undergoing further validation. CAPTUS will also evaluate economic, environmental, and societal factors, fostering new business models and strategies. Organized into 8 work packages, CAPTUS involves 18 partners from 8 EU nations. The project's innovations will strengthen CCU applications in three key sectors, curbing carbon emissions, boosting renewable energy use, and creating beneficial energy products.

A4F Role

To develop and demonstrate at TRL7 a novel technology to convert CO2 from chemical industry carbon emissions to produce bio-oils as liquid energy carrier. The viability the demonstration plant will be designed, optimised and demonstrated by combining two processes: microalgae cultivation using captured and conditioned CO2, and a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) to produce bio-oils from the cultivated algae. A4F will be D2 demo leader, the technology developer of microalgae cultivation system, for the engineering and installation of PBRs.
